How to: Change the Setup source path in Windows 95.
Solution:
Use the System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) on the Windows 95 CD-ROM to change the path for Windows 95 source files.
CAUTION: This procedure should be performed by an advanced user or under the supervision of next-level support.
NOTE 1: Before making any modification to the Registry, be sure to make backup copies of the Registry files System.dat and User.dat. Using the Registry Editor and modifying the Registry incorrectly could cause serious problems that may require the reinstallation of Windows 95. For more information about the Registry Editor or the Registry, please refer to the online Help topics.
NOTE 2: System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) is available in the 'ADMIN\APPTOOLS\POLEDIT' folder on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. Run the System Policy Editor directly from the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
NOTE 3: System Policy Editor is not available in the floppy disk version of Windows 95. The self-extracting, executable file Policy.exe (which contains Poledit.exe) can be downloaded from online services.
1) Insert the Windows 95 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
2) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
3) Select 'Run'. (The 'Run' dialog box appears.)
4) Type the following command (in the 'Open' list box) and press ENTER:
<drive:\>\Admin\Apptools\Poledit\POLEDIT
(where <drive:\> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.)
NOTE: The 'System Policy Editor' window appears.
5) Select the 'File' menu and then select 'Open Registry'. (The 'Local User' and 'Local Computer' icons appear.)
6) Double-click 'Local Computer' icon.
7) Click the plus sign (+) next to 'System'.
8) Click 'Network Path for Windows Setup' check box, then type the new source path.
9) Click 'OK'.
NOTE: The new source path is saved in the Registry.
10) Exit System Policy Editor.
11) Restart Windows 95 to enable the new source path.
